Step 3: What about Assesment Tasks?

Thank you all for this week's posts about what you exactly want to study within the topics. I have included all of these suggestions in our programs in addition to other elements that I have already programmed for you.

Now, I need some help with assessment tasks. Unfortunately, these must be done and not doing them isn't a choice. However, I am certainly interested in what your thoughts are on assessment tasks.

Please respond to the following questions by 5pm Friday.

In the 3 learning areas of performing, composing and listening, what suggestions do you have about how we could be assessed on these three skills in Music? What activities/projects/tasks do you suggest? What assessment tasks would you enjoy completing?

Please keep in mind, that we need to set assessment tasks in EACH of the three areas of perfoming, composing and listening.

  1. On the topic of assesment tasks, for:
Performing: we perform a piece of music (our choice) and get assesed on the level of music and how we play it. perform on instruments or vocals of our choice.
Composing: we compose a piece of music and get assesed on it through our use of techniques
Listening: we are given a piece of music and we are to write about it and analyse it.

  2. For assessment tasks involving the the three componets of listening, performing and composing.
Performing: we perform a piece of music, which we are given time to practice, whether it be rock or classical music and also whether we perform it in small ensembles (bands) or indivudualy.
Listening: we are given an unknown piece of music of which we have not listened to before and we are to analyse and explain how different techniques are used, for example the texture and duration.
Composing: we are to create a new score of music which certain componets that it must have then be assessed on this. Some examples are certain time signatures and how bars are avaliable for us to use.

  4. Heyy miss.
For performing we are given a piece of music which we are to individually (or if preferred in small ensembles) practice and learn which we then have to present.
For composing we are given a scene in which we have to create a piece of music which fits, and creates the right effect in which we are suppose to try and achieve.
For listening we are given a piece of music which we have not heard before. Then we are given instructions on what to find and analyse. For example time signature, tempo, the composer (if not already given) etcetera.

  5. Hi Steph, Nathan, Jack and Dkahota,

Thank you for your posts. I like all of your ideas and have incorporated these already in our assessment plan. Would you prefer to do the listening work on computers and submit work electronically like an online portfolio or in hard written copy? What works best for you? Also, should your assessment be based on just one piece (like an exam) or a number during the semester (in case you 'bomb out' in that one piece?) What do we all think? I like how you are thinking about composition and performance.

    Keep the posts coming.

  6. Hey miss,
i think i would prefer to do the listening work on computers and submit the work electronically.
For performing, i think it would be better to get assesed on a number of pieces during the semester.

  7. Hey Miss,
For performance, I think we should have a variety of both single and group performances on songs of your choice and songs of our choice.
For listening, analysing pieces of music. I also think listening on computers would aslo be a cool idea.
For composing, writing a piece of music for media etc on Sibelius or composing a song on GarageBand.

  9. hi miss for performing i think we should perform a song on an instrument or vocals (our choice)and be assesed on how well we perform it. on composing i think we are to create a new score of music which certain componets that it must have then be assessed on this. for listening i think we should listen to a piece of music we havent heard before and use our techniques like tone colour and dynamics and be assesed on that. aaron

  10. heyy miss
I would prefer if we do an electronic portfolio on the computers.
Also for performing i think we should be able to choose between how many pieces we can do (with a limit of course) and be assessed on them throughout the semester.

  11. Hey miss,
I would like to do the listening assessment on computers and sumbit them via computer.
And for performing I think we should have a few pieces to perform, maybe even different styles so people who aren't great with rock music will have a chance to show their talent performing classical music

  14. Hey Miss, bit of a late reply but my thoughts are pretty much covered by my peers. We should have the option to peform in groups for the performance aspect if we wish. Thanks,
